Benefits of Kids Activities

Doing hands-on activities at home with your kids is like setting up a trust fund for academics (with some hidden emotional benefits)!

Early experiences help kids gain confidence and get the repeated practice they need to build the skills and dexterity required later on.

How Kids Activities Helped my Son

My son can read and write numbers to 100. He can add single and double digit numbers and has begun phonetic spelling and reading environmental print. He is very advanced for his age, but he wasn’t always that way.

At 3 years old my son had NO interest in writing, coloring or drawing. He wouldn’t hold a crayon & chose other activities when everyone else would be coloring or drawing. There were new & concerning behaviors that I had no idea we’d have to overcome. He had no interest in letters or numbers and could not count to 3 and only knew the first letter of his first name.

In the scope of life this really was not a big deal. It’s perfectly normal in fact.

But one day it became a big deal to him, so naturally it was a big deal to me. I saw him noticing (at 3) how other kids at school could do things and he couldn’t yet do and instead of trying he’d say “I can’t” and that he “didn’t want to be different”. After several talks about diversity and the nature of people I decided to be more strategic with our play time. Whatever he wanted to learn more about that is the skill we practiced (inside a theme).

My son is SUPER observant and very tall for his age. People often expect more of him and vocalize their expectations. (I always set him straight but it’s still something he notices.) They are surprised to learn how young he is but what they don’t realize is he notices their high expectations and had started taking it personally. The kids he’d play with would be “better” at drawing or coloring letters or numbers and he noticed.

Extra Practice for Kids who Need More Time

Kids activities at home offer your more time for children that need it. My son noticed his peers and cousins (older than him but still close in age) doing these things and started saying that he is not good at drawing or letters or numbers or whatever the kids were doing and separate himself from the group of kids to pout.

He didn’t do anything wrong and wasn’t “behind” he just needed more practice, especially since he had no interest in the beginning. We talked about what he wanted to learn more about and started doing these activities when I got home from work & on weekends.

We were playing and having so much fun he didn’t realize he was learning so much until recently when his grandma & grandpa asked him to count. He made it to 100 all by himself!

Playing IS learning!

For homeschooling preschool we spent about 30 minutes per day (give or take depending on his stamina) using play-based kids activities for our learning.

He will tell you everything you could ever (probably not) want to know about Dinosaurs, Ocean & Farm animals!

Get done for your preschool themes that include sensory play, snack ideas, monthly activity calendars, book lists & more!
