Farm Animals
What is your child’s favorite thing to learn about? For my son it’s ANIMALS! Kids of ALL ages love animals and one of our favorite themes is FARM Animals!
Farm Activity Calendar
We used this Farm theme Activity Calendar for our preschool at home studies (and a revised version for First Grade this year).
You can make a simple Activity Calendar by printing out a Google Calendar and jotting down the activities you want to try to and keep yourself organized or grab mine for free.
Customize your theme by asking and answering these questions for yourself:
What types of animals are on the farm?
We will focus on animals like; cows, sheep, goats, Chickens & Roosters, Pigs. How they live on a farm (what they need, where they sleep, etc.)
What are the best farm books?
Read Books and draw pictures to find out where they live on the farm (barn, pasture, coop, pen, etc.) and what they eat, and how they help people (if your family talks about animals raised for food).
How do I introduce a Farm theme?
We use play based learning activities to introduce topics and teach kids the skills they need to be successful in school.
A fun way to introduce a FARM Theme for PREK and younger kids is with songs!

FARM Enrichment Experiences:
Do you remember your favorite family trip as a kid?
Many people take their kids to a petting zoo or pumpkin patch each year because it is a family tradition or it’s just good clean fun (so to speak- my son always comes home messy)!
We preschool at home and I plan most of our themed units around enrichment experiences. Check out what your local area has to offer for petting zoos or call around to nearby farms and see if they have a program where kids can come check out the animals.
If that isn’t an option try a Pumpkin Patch they are usually open late September until the end of October.

Sensory Play
If you do not have access to a farm or Pumpkin Patch try making a Farm Themed Sensory Bin. This bin is an indoor/outdoor activity.
NOTE: I pick up my sensory bin materials about a season in advance. The materials for our Ocean Sensory Bin were purchased a season in advance and I recommend looking out for Fall or farm themed toys in the summer and grab ’em while you can or they’ll be gone by August I can almost guarantee it!
Indoor/ Outdoor Play Area or Dramatic Play Center
Backyard Farmer’s Market:
- activity table (ages 3+ , ages 4+)
- play food (sliceable play food– I like the larger sets for vocabulary building but they are made to of cheap plastic)
- cash register (optional)
These are great to have ready to go for those scorching hot early fall days anyway!
